Well there are plenty of hosts offering all you need to be hosted for a year for under $10 and a domain is under $10.

So either way they will have to pay to look professional as without a domain it will look "bad", just like on a free image host (and most likely worse as free image hosts are a convinient option, this hosting wouldn't be).

Another point would be that the quality of work would be reduced. This is that people are already offering jobs for $5 (which is pointless as paypal will eat a bit of it) and encouraging young people to enter the web design world where they would be set up for free (hosting and people obtain programmes for free) woud lead to less devoted workers and more kids making a quick buck.

I voted no , free hosting isn't for a professional.

I would like to thank everyone for their input. This is something I wanted to do but nearly decided against once I learned that almost 50% of the community disagreed.

I've taken everyone's comments into consideration.

As requested by Aros and velizio there will be a contract that both parties will have to agree upon.

As requested by joe and Spawny there will be a minimum member registration period required along side other requirements to obtain hosting.

As requested by sniper101 the server that TalkFreelance members will be hosted on will be using Apache.

Think about the big picture.
I thought about it and I have to disagree with you. I see no way that giving free hosting accounts to designers / coders could lessen the quality of the design industry. In fact, I think it will strengthen the design industry.

There are some very talented designers and coders out there that don't have the means to pay for monthly hosting. They may not have the money or they may not have a way to send payments.

The big picture is you give a few accounts out and help some young developers get recognized.

I will post a thread with all the details probably tomorrow. If you have any more comments or last minute suggestions, please contact me. My email address is: mattwalkeris@gmail.com

You can also private message me or instant message me via AIM, MSN, or Yahoo.

To combat your views:

If these so called 'talented' designers and coders were in fact that talented, they would either:

a) have their own portfolio active by now
b) be able to raise the money to pay for a low cost host
c) not be interested in free hosting at all

They may not have their own online portfolio because they can't send payments to a host and start one. In that sense free hosting would surely be to their advantage.

This would also help web developers that are just emerging.

hmm, so if they can't send a payment how do they get paid for projects?
plenty of hosts offer paypal for payment so there's no excuse

If they are young their parents might not allow them to send payments, but allow them to accept. I know when I was 16 the same was true for me.

You could argue back and forth about this. The truth is if you don't want the hosting, don't use it. If you need it, use it. It really is that simple.

  Old  free hosting?

I dont think so.....let's see how long you are going to last...
your time isnt valuable?
I do provide dirt cheap hosting with the best features available on the net....
but i cannot make it free when i pay for it1
yes it is a lot of work to host if you do it correctly with all bells and whitles!
any entreprise in this capitalist system has to make a profit in order to survive and last the distance...
do not shoot yourself in the foot!
