A VPS is a Virtual Private Server. Unlike a shared hosting environment, a VPS provides you with a slice of a whole dedicated server and actually guarantees certain dedicated resources like RAM (something shared hosting accounts do not offer).

A VPS is recommended for more intense websites that do a lot more processing work than average websites.

Thinks of a VPS as a physical server. However, unlike physical server the VPS (VMs) are created through virtualization technologies. Tehre are various virtualization technologies, which create a different virtual environments that run on top of the physical machine. I'd suggest you to spend some time reading about virtualization.

A VPS is an allocation of a physical servers resources. It is isolated so you have all the control of a dedicated server without the price point.

I would recommend shared hosting if you aren't familiar with how a VPS works, but if you do get one find a provider that offers you cPanel and managed services.
