The second one is nice, but I don't think it fits your style of design as well as #1 does.

Have to agree.
There is no reason a tabless site has to look crappy, infact much more intense and complicated layouts are possible with CSS.

Well, coding doesn't really mean it has to be worse in the design sense. You could easily convert the first one into tableless without a loss of quality.
