Old  Hosting -- What To Look For? [Article]

What you need?
Ask yourself this question, what do I need? Write down how much space and bandwidth you think you'll need. Jot down what features you want(Control Panel, Sub-Domains, etc..). When looking for hosts find packages within these ranges, but have the ability to upgrade to larger packages in the future. Don't go for the outrageous space and bandwidth deals, because most likely if it looks too good to be true then it isn't. The company may eventually go bankrupt quickly or the service is just plain terrible.

Looking around
Go look around, when you think you find a good package look for real customer reviews on the company at google and another place that I highly recommend is http://webhostingtalk.com to find real unbiased ratings about the company. Keep doing this until you find a package that suits you and that has good reviews.

Examine the company
See what ways they have for customer support. Look around to make sure there are several ways to contact them for support because when and if your host goes down or has problems you want a way to contact them fast. If they have a 1-800 number try calling it, sometimes they won't work meaning the company is just blatanly lying about their toll-free support. See how long the company has been around for. Usually the longer the better because well if there still here they must be doing something right. Find out where their servers are located and what your site will be hosted on. If they have a forum browse around to see what kind of problems people get if any. Look to see if they have any uptime monitering service and if they do see how many times they have been down.

Purchasing
Once your 100% sure that you want the host you found see if there is any setup fees and such. Then when actually ordering make sure you are on a secure server and they have a valid SSL Certificate which is indicated by the padlock on your browser. This ensures that any information transfered like credit card numbers and such are encrypted usually with 128-bit encryption which is equivalent to what most banks have.
