Beating vBulletin is more than hard. The time taken to build an application that is even close to vBulletin would be crazy. Thats why I suggested to him maybe build a CMS (most websites these days would like something to manage their content with) instead of having to do it manually.

But I definitely get where your coming from!

How about you go one step better than PHP and build an Apache module-based CMS. I've heard of one which can process pages in under a millisecond (with usual DB queries, templating, et al)... sure beats the 0.1-2 seconds of a PHP CMS.

A fully customiseable CMS? Which is totally skinable maybe even through the web-site its self.

I wouldn't even attempt to create a forum (especially one with the intention to compete with vb lol) you would be wasting your time. Now, you don't need to think of a script that has never been done before, just research what the most popular scripts are right now and what your competitors are. I think image hosting/file upload scripts are very in at the moment and from the ones i've see they are all very similar. I think if you created a script within this market and promoted it effectivly you would definitly sell a few copies with ease! Just undercut your competitors price and include a few extra tidbits

Whatever you make, make sure you plan it thoroughly before you start coding it and make it as extendable as possible and the easiest way to do that would be if you used OOP. If you build it with those in mind, there would be no limit to what it can become though it may have started out as something very basic.

I like the idea of an image hosting script, maybe media hosting script. Where if you upload a video there will be a player page for people wanting to share the video with there friends etc.. or if its a picture there will be a bb code etc.. I could work on that I don't really want to try somthing as hard as vbulletin that took years and years to do by not just one person, No need to go over my head Well I am doing the script sounds fun, maybe a thing that changes the videos file extension every minute to stop people embedding it onto there own sites.

Oh ok Well I am doing the hosting script some features:

Users can register
If not registered they will see what theyve uploaded with there IP address.
If they upload videos they will be moved to a media page and a link to show there friends etc..
Will have detailed real time statistics page on servers and files hosted and types etc..

So theres my project
