Try and complete a few tutorials, look at good-tutorials.com, they have some nice ones.

first get your idea on paper, sketch it verry simple.
then open up PS/AI and remake the logo you've just drawn.

Practice, practice, practice, and when you are sick of practicing, practice some more!

You can never get enough practice. Look at other logos, learn how good ones are brought together, read articles on designing. It's a long road that only a few ever get good at.

As a designer you are a problem solver and it is up to you to come up with designs for the customer that they couldn't think of, you are not here to design what the average joe can, otherwise they wouldn't need to employ you.

One more thing to bear in mind is practice and of course on any project do research, don't ever blindly tackle a problem you have no knowledge about.

I have always learned by using tutorials. There are so many tutorials for photoshop on the internet anyone can learn to become a good designer if they invest the time. I find tutorialized.com to be very helpful to me for several different programs. They have over 6,000 photoshop tutorials. Hope this helps.

Well firstly, take a look around at other sites, see 'Whats hot and whats not' as id like to call it.

It all depends on taste, try asking a few people / business etc.. what they like, what makes a layout good for them, thats where i advize you to start.

In my opinion looking at tutorials shouldnt be your first form of resource, unless of course you are unfamiliar with the tools of photoshop. Look around, but dont copy what you see. Open up photoshop and practice as Julian said. Learn style and find out what appeals to todays viewers. As you progress then start to try and adapt your designs to the basic guidlines of web design.

Practice doesnt make prefect, creativity does.
