  Old  .Net's effects?

Soon, I am going to start devving my big forum idea, its a nice general idea, and i really plan to focus on it, and dev it like crazy, but Ive been having a hard time with a domain name, and I have one i like, but its a .net, (the .com is tooken, but it redircts to an entire different site, that has been outdated for years)

The .com Domain expires the 22nd of this month, but then when exactly will I be able to register it? 60 days? 90 days?

and the .Net is avaiable, and its 100% of a brandable word (Short, and semi made up)

Do you think just using a .net would effect anything?

IMO..

A .net is not bad, but when your looking in the long run, the .com will be more valuable. If you look at it that way, people will always scramble for a .com and it would always get more clicks.

For instance, if you have a person-person conversation, and your site comes up in the discussion, but lets say 6-7 hours later someone forgets your site's link but remembers your sites name. His first search would be to search .com.

Maybe hard to explain, but I hope you see where I'm coming from.

Registering .net is not bad, and won't affect your business.

I totaly get what you are saying, I do the same thing, when I cant remember, I automatically expect it to be a .com, but the fact that the .com has nothing to DO witht he domian idea, OR my site, so the .net would be the second guess no?

I think if you do the godaddy thing with $18.99 for already taken domains you will get it the 22nd. Not sure though.

In my opinion as the majority of people I would assume is that the dot "net" extension is second inline after dot "com" extension. Get the dot net domain name and put the dot com on backorder then if and when it goes into the registry pool again you'll get it right away.

Oh long until the domain expires? Then i think it's another month or so before it's up for grab's again. So you might be waiting awhile.

OH yeah, nice signature!

When the domain actually expires, it takes 30 days for the owner of that domain to re-new it. After that 30 day period you can purchase it. So you will be able to purchase the domain 22 days later than the expiration date.

good luck
