Old  Colour scrollbars? Another fad dead?

I remember when I first started designing websites this was very trendy, using css you were able to match the scrollbar with the colour scheme of the website. Does anyone have any links to sites that still use this? Do browsers still support it even?

I can't remember when the last time I came across a site with coloured scrollbars was, so just wondering if it's now extinct.

I like default tbh, Dont really use the scrollbar either.. Using scroll using mouse. But on some sites I think it looks very nice when done properly.

As far as I know FF doesn’t support it. As I use FF I can’t really comment because it’s quite possible that some of the sites I visit DO have coloured scroll bars and I just can’t see them.

I know vbulletin 2.0 used to use colour scroll bars as default, 3.0 got rid of them though. I’m sure that made up quite a large percentage of websites following the trend.

It still works in IE, the main reason i think its not so popular is because i dont think Mozilla/Firefox allows it (because their scrollbars are themed)

Not sure of any sites that still use it though

CSS is what controls that. What I would do is, I would google for "CSS scrollbars" and use the links I find off that
This only works in IE based/related browsers (I think that means Opera too).

The truth is that CSS was never ever meant to control things such as scrollbar since that is actually a part of the OS's implementation of a scrollbar so if the user is impaired in some way, the colours you choose to colour your scrollbars could affect him in a bad way. Such a user would have themed the scrollbar in such a way that it optimizes browsing for him and you controlling his scrollbars from your CSS could impair him.

Now for the IE part, to put it loosely, it was Microsoft that introduced this scrollbar colouring thing.
This probably hapenned during the browser wars to get the edge over its competitors but I'm just guessing there (I hate reading anything other than code off the computer and I don't watch the news ).

So don't think that it's because of Firefox that you can't colour your scrollbars

Hope that made sense

Coloured scroll bars still have their place, especially when using iframes.

You gotta remember that IE is still the main player as far as browsers go, 67% compared to mozilla's 27%

Firefox browser use is also the domain of the internet savvy, not the regular Joe Surfer. Therefore it is still recommended to design for IE and scroll bars are one of it's features.

I have not designed them into any sites lately but have helped two younger designers weave them into their static image pages with absolute positioned iframes. The scroll bars were blended into the pages imagery and made the page look seamless.

They dont look nice anyway, the flat colours. I think the XP Skinned ones look better.

Anyway, in my opinion, it's a bad idea to colour scrollbars of a business/corporate site because I think it interferes with accessibility plus it's a propriety feature.

They definitely died off.

I got into them for about a year on sites like freemoney and vpanels but when everyone and his dog started using them the novelty wore off.
