I wouldn't use Word documents because not everybody pays for M$ Office
RTF or PDF format would be much better PHP has built-in functions for PDF in PDFlib, packaged with PHP by default with version >=4.30
Can't really do much in school in terms of examples but the function reference ca be found @ http://php.net/pdf

Agreed. RTF would be a better solution. Also to generate a .doc file, you would need a windows server I believe.

Because colleges and universitys tend to stick with the MS packages, eg Office, Excel, it has become very common, with apple having to release their version to work with MS Office. However when it comes to the internet domain, you are dealing with the entire world, of which quite a few people dont even have computers able to run word documents, never mind PDF files, so RTF is usually the best choice, however if you concider the percentage of users who can run PDF files (for free lets not forget) its usually better to go with that. As for producing pdf files using PHP i dont think this is possible as creating PDF's requires a developers license from adobe i think. Incedentally, what does everyone think of adobe's takeover of macromedia?

rtf??? Only nerds like us know .rtf hehehe
Go with .pdf or .doc. I mean, who can't open .doc files?
For people who don't have MS Word, there are a bunch of free alternatives as Village Idiot mentioned.
Lastly, if you're really that worried, then just offer .pdf AND .doc formats.

Just for reference, people who don't have MS Office, and have OpenOffice are able to open .docs with OOo. I'm assuming other free alternatives offer support as well.
