  Old  Canadian Invasion

G'day all.... Dave here.

We're another couple of Canadian's eh.

The wife and I have been working from home for over 7 years now. Doing it in my sleep (though I rarely get any) these days.

I don't even no if I am a 'Freelancer' or an 'Entrepenuer' now. Started as a Freelancer? Now with 12 staff (outsourced freelancers of course), I suppose we're a company.. but hey, let's not split hairs.

We're in Web development and makreting (offline,SEO and SEM).

Just started poking around the site, so I shall run into ya'll as I do!!

Cheers...

David

  Old  Wisdom my Grasshopper

Sure ROBSON… I can teach ya TONS of things NOT to do. Ha ha ha ha

If you’re going to be successful you need to make 10 000 mistakes. Try and learn 9000 from others..

How’s that? A good start?

Lately I am specializing on identifying trouble clients and writing strong policies. A bad client can take up HUGE amounts of one’s time. Man.. truly a killer.

So what’s your forte?

Dave

To be honest David, I'm not sure i've even found my forte yet!

I'm currently running this website (obviously) and I have a few other projects starting, one being a webhosting newsletter and the other a traffic supplier (I ran one before last year before selling it for a few thousand). I'm getting into web development and i'm also a keen graphic designer, just working on a banner for a contest at the moment.

My first major success was www.banners2go.com, you can see some of my work there. I'm also learning alot about search engine optimization and have a real passion for online and offline marketing especially viral marketing.

Old  What to do..where to go

Say, isn‘t it getting late over there?
I have 5 or so client’s in the UK…used to the time diff.
(We have one in almost every time zone though.. From around North America to Western Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia.. Who needs sleep?)

SEO and SEM are a big growth market. Unfortunately it’s flooded with a great deal of ignorant providers and client’s with high expectations and no budget. We’re doing some, but holding off for another 6 months or more until the market legitimizes itself.

The wed development market is picking up again though. Best I have seen it in a few years. So keep up on the SEO/SEM studies, I find it fascinating myself, but look to web development for cash now.

Want something to wake ya up.. jump over to a Lingerie site my wife is working on here this evening he he..

Server is a bit slow… but it ain’t on one of mine!! :0}

Every need a chat.. feel free to PM or email …

Cheers….

Welcome to Talk Freelance Dave.

A bad client can take up HUGE amounts of one’s time. Man.. truly a killer.
I second that! I have recently been involved with two clients that have cost me alot of time and money. After such experiences it can really play on your esteem and sometimes wonder if it is all worth the trouble freelancing. However I still find myself here and looking to continue in the business. Mind you I am taking a bit of a break while I focus on my transition to university at the moment.

Your time and experience in the industry should be of great benifit to the community. Hopefully you will be able to learn new things from others here as well.

  Old  80/20 Rule

Hi Travis

Certainly it's a hard learned lesson. The trick is never to be desperate for work, and try to feel out potential clients better. In the end it is almost unavoidable. Awareness will help limit some of the pain ans losses associated with a troublesome client.

I wrote a neat article on our site about what's called the 80/20 rule for clients.
see; The 80/20 Rule

As far as policy, you can use ours in part or in whole if you want (for web developers );
CDS Policy
Cheers

Dave
