Eventually I want to make a basic CMS for myself, so where should I start?

I want the basics of writing to a database and editing these etc through php but Ive never really found anything like this.

Well, I would start with some tutorials. Complete CMS's are really hard for beginners because you need avid knowledge of PHP and MySQL. Start with more basic scripts that use the same knowledge as in a CMS. For example, you could make some News Scripts and Membership scripts. Just start out small, get confortable then use what you know to create a CMS. Pixel2life.com also has some good CMS tutorials.

I'd start by making a table to hold your content. Then make a php driven form that loads content into the table. Then write a php script that spits your content out onto the page.

You'll need to know:
How to process forms with PHP
How to retrieve data from a database using PHP and SQL (SELECT and INSERT commands).
How to spit out the data you retrieved.

A very basic knowledge of programming and database theory is needed to get you this far.

Before you start using PHP in conjunction with MySQL, it would be hugely beneficial to read the manual. MySQL Docs & PHP Docs - You'll find yourself constantly heading back to these sources of documentation. However, those manuals are just basic documentation.

A couple of tutorials explaining the basics of MySQL & PHP would come in handy here, so I suggest heading over to the Zend website (they created PHP) and follow:
Rotating Banner Advertisements with PHP and, [url=http://www.zend.com/zend/tut/tutorial-yank.php][b]Build your own database driven website using PHP & MySQL. Alternatively, check out Zend's Tutorial Page for a whole heap of PHP tutorials, not all MySQL related.

Well if you follow the mysql tutorials on p2l and the ones about connecting to databases and not just the cms then you should be able to put them together to create a cms then those simple walkthroughs they do for a full cms. also if you have a barnes & nobles or books-a-million around then check out mysql or php books, i have a few and theyve helpded a great deal.
