Actually both of them are really important, you need to have the quantity of quality backlinks in your for your site to get on top of the SE's

As per my knowledge, quality is important. In content, quality is must. Even in backlinks, I prefer quality back links. The success by quality is long lasting. It stays forever.

Quality vs. Quantity
Quality is always better then Quantity.Use qualitative content on website it helps to increase more visitors.Better content will get easy caching on search engines.
