What if the designer simply cannot afford the fee and needs to sell some work? It's creating an elite class of designers and that's never a good thing.

Also this will be interesting to see the designers disappointed with SP fee tactics dragged to TalkFreelance - this should populate the Marketplace here pretty well (yes, Your sig is well exposed on SP ).
But there may be a point when moderating $5 sales will be such a PITA, that something should be done to regulate such activity.

That's just the question of the target group You decide to aim Your forum at.
Quality/quantity - usually the mix of both is not possible, as only X% (or XX%) of the providers (in almost every brand or market) offer really quality services.

Sitepoint was created in 1997....they have only just introduced this fee, nearly 10 years down the line, they were never aimed at this higher end market, not until they realised it's quite a little earner.

I know ALOT of amazing designers (quite young) who can produce great work but half the time they're broke and need money, how do you expect them to fork out a fee to even list their work? This isn't to do with quality, it's to do with money.

I agree with Robson. I don't like listing what I don't use on Sitepoint anyway.

Offtopic: Am i in the amazing designers group robson?

Of course Mase, there are alot of younger designers like yourself who produce great work but simply can't afford a fee to list their work when there isn't even a chance of it selling...I can't possibly see how sitepoint did this to further the community.

If they're only spending their time in the MarketPlace section, they're not a huge loss in my opinion. And if that's the case, who's to say they won't going TF (or any other related community) solely for the contests/trading...

While I feel for the younger one's who might not always be able to afford the fees, I believe they will improve the quality of the MarketPlace, not only for the members, but for moderators as well.

instead of that fee i would put a person to sort the templates. This way a good design gets into the site even if the author can't afford to pay $5, and an ugly one will be out of the game even if the author is bill gates

Exactly, but if they did that....they wouldn't make any money

There are plenty of forums they can sell their designs on! TF is one of them, there ale much more (no advertiding... so - yx, zmc, clntmlpts, wth). They can sell them on semi-pro ones and when they get professional level and know what to charge for professional work - they'll easilly afford the $10 fee, and it will be much less then 10% of the price they'll sell their work for.
