no offense, but get a real job if you have people to support.

No offense but this thread will go no where , There is no way you can bring down the competition , I had seen freelancers younger then me offering 3$/hour for the design.

Freelancing isn't really a solid way to make a guaranteed income. If you have a family to support then it's really risky, however some people do make a great living from doing it.

I think you've made the mistake of coming onto a freelance forum to moan about how life is unfair and how you can't compete.

As they say, if you can't take the heat...get out of the kitchen

may be unfair, but thats life and thats business. it's competition, there's no law against having low prices.
Wow, that's a great word, I have to remember it!

Anyway, just make quality work; make your clients want to pay the extra money for your products.

well it is getting really interresting!
one major point that i want to make....it is not because your opinion about the topic is not favorable that we all have to forget about it and go home or shutup!
second: you are mis-sinform their is alot of freelance artist that make a very good living and to prove it:
http://www.directoryofillustration.com/
so please before you open your mouth and say stupid things or things that you cannot support with facts ..and embarras yourself..think twice.
people who are just copying quotes whithout adding their own comments are just embarrassing themselves by showing their lack of grey matter, from what I am concern!
about staying out of the kitchen , you might be right I beleive in art and i have been fighting for it for 30 years now, i could be wrong i should have chosen ,maybe to be a follower and steal templates ,modifing them and re-selling them for a bock or two.
then no...... I love and respect myself and others ,I could not do that! and it's no fun!
but i am enjoying it and i thank the people that take the risk of saying something ,even if i desagree ,even if i prove them wrong.

You can make good money freelancing... Let me re-phrase that - Good money can be made freelancing but, as has been said already in this thread, it is not a dependable income on which to support a family.

I made good money freelancing for years but it was always fat vs lean. <exaggerated examples>One month I could be buying a car and dining out every night, the next I could be sleeping in the car and starving</exaggerated examples> When I got married and had a son I became responsible for two more lives and knew I had to find a full-time position. It's a lot easier knowing how much you are going to have available to pay the bills etc at the end of the month.

bring down the competition...
no i dont think that' sthe way.
I think we should try to get along together ..
they are work for everybody...plenty
i do not think that outsourcing to the third
world is going to solve povrety, to the contrary
It might create a new breed of slaves.
the trikkle down factor never works.
It also bring the quality to a commun denominator which is low and
i wont have anything to do with that.
My ideas when it comes to work is :
-quality and fun.
wjithout it it not worthy to me!
now i thanks all those wise guys ,promt to embarras themselves giving me ,the opportunity to talk! so fast to judge me whithout knowing me!
I enjoy it they are running into my territory like fools.
i really enjoy it!
