I asked this question to a few people i knew who did photography on the side as a job and they told me to start with get a Nikon d40 , it may be expensive if you will but im willing to save the money. For christmas i got a Canon powershot a590 which takes really good pictures, i love taking sunset/rise alot and it serves its purpose.

you should buy new extra ordinary camera which includes minimum 6 mega pixel camera.

I have an FZ-28 (10.1 M) and a Kodak ZD710 (7.2 M).

The FZ-28 is a Panasonic manufactured camera and is pretty damn decent. Though it's quite huge... here's a pic:



It records also in real 'high definition' and the ability of this camera is amazing. (Though the sound is lacking in quality; in comparison to the video quality)

It's an awesome piece of kit and it has a super zoom of 18 x optical zoom and 72 x digital zoom.

A REALLY good camera! It cost me around £238.

i use samsung and i'm very glad that i buy such camera! =0 as for other - i advice to use professional cameras - the quality will be really perfect!
