Old  The best way to learn PHP

Hi

I learned PHP using the book PHP in 24 hours, and read it again and again on the train to work. I made mistakes, but it was an easy book to learn.

Cheers

Paul

I run a software development company specialising in E-Commerce, Search Engine Optimization, and Print Estimation software called ROBO Design Solutions. I also develop New Zealand E-Commerce Solutions and Software under the name ROBO Design.

As with any language i would recommend reading about the history and evolution of whatever particular language you're learning first (PHP in this case). If you know about how and why it came about it gives you a greater understanding of how and why things work before you've really started getting into too much hardcore coding. This way the learning process becomes quicker and more natural as it makes logical sense. You'll find yourself scratching your head for less time (although there will still be a lot of it!).

My best recommendation would be to find a book on the subject that walks you through, step by step, and is easy to read. I just said this elsewhere earlier, but I really like the Sitepoint books for exactly this reason. Then find a good PHP reference (O'Reily or something similary) and keep sites like w3schools.com bookmarked for syntax questions and such. And join a PHP developer forum where you can ask questions.

Of course, you'll never do any of the above if you don't have a good project to keep you engaged in the subject. But it sounds like you do.

If you wanna learn how to create that kinda stuff, there is a for dummies book that is called PHP and MySQL Apps For Dummies or something like that, and it shows you how to make a shopping cart and online sales application, a content management system, and a forum.

As others have said, there are some really good books on PHP out there. I've found the best way for me to learn a new language is to start with a book, to get the basics. Then just start playing around and see what I can accomplish.

Im still learning php as well, but the best way is to read as many tutorials online as possible. Then check out some sites that are using the language and you will begin to see the things you learn come together. There is still no substitute for experience.
