Furthermore, the bumping of old threads encourages more people to spam that very thread - http://www.talkfreelance.com/showpos...8&postcount=32

Agreed Seb. Spamming should be kept to a minimum, as well as the "why can't I post" threads. If you don't feel the issue can be resolved with a simple "Don't do that", then create a group for the users that frequent these actions and only allow them to post in a specified forum created for that group.

I believe that you should simply watch topics closer instead putting up limits. There are many people (just like me) who are into marketing / selling and buying things and it can be very annoying to see "you need x posts first". While I do like to review sites or to help people, I feel kinda sad to see that you first have to make x posts before you can do what you originally want to do - be it selling something or looking for a trade etc.

Look at me for example, I was searchning Google for marketplace forums and found your forums so I thought: Let's post some trading topic (you expect to be allowed to do so if you find a forum employing a marketplace) and then you can't. While I understand that there are many spammers who leave after one post, I also know there are people like my (and there are many) who just want to enjoy a community while doing business.

All that said, if you find it annoying that people bump old topics just to post in the marketplace, then you should maybe just allow posting right away and deal with the spammers based on what they post. If someone gets banned, it will happen sooner or later anyways and the 10 spam posts they made won't matter anymore anyways.

The first impression is what matters, and if you "have to" do something before you can do what you want to do, then you will lose your interest faster than someone would think. Like I said, I don't care to become a part of a community because not everything is business. However, it makes much more sense to let people do what they want except its really something bad like a scam, warez or pure spam.

I know this is one of those "older" topics that were mentioned in this thread, but...

Regarding the phone spam, I run an active vb forum as well, and we get a lot of it.

I found a good mod a vbulletin.org that stops it from making it to the public forum.

You can set it so that the posts get auto-moderated by keyword (like nokia) for people with x amount of posts or less.

It's called Prevent Spam Posts: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=131568

This one might also help as well:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=156444

That way trusted active members who see the phone spam before moderators can do a quick delete and ban of the offended. It will also help moderators clean up the stuff quicker.
