I'd say, give him a final warning, if he still carries on then give him his marching orders but as the others have said, it's not a paying job so you can't expect him to be on time with everything.
If you feel his not doing a good enough job, then get rid of him and get someone you can rely on.
The decision is all down to you

Here is my plan... Basically I'm going to ask him if he still is interested in this project as if he still wants to work for me but has lost interested in this one, I have some other ones comming up soon, if that doesn't solve the problem he'll get a final warning

I think confronting him and giving him a fair warning is a good start. Maybe he can get things together.

Lol, all this talk of warnings.

I would send someone like this a letter (e-mail) detailing everything expected of him and ask if he is prepared to continue working under my conditions. I would outline that it is unpaid work but having good work ethics is a quality he should try and aim towards. I would also say that his work so far is excellent, his quality and attention to detail is above expectations etc, but his time management skills are severly lacking. So much so, that projects are getting too far behind deadlines. Ask if he is prepared to step up to the mark and display the professionalism that you know he can achieve. If not give him an opportunity to gracefully resign.

In everything you write be professional and civil.

Julians advice is the best. Tell him what he does right, explain his shortcomings and give him an opportunity to fix them or step down.

I am sure there are plenty of good people here that could fill his shoes and meet your deadlines. Even if they are mostly a bunch of kids .

Thank you Woof

Maybe my advice is more real because I am a manager and deal with these sorts of issues on almost a monthly basis. I have to be able to get the best out of my team and this is what I would do in real life.

Can you call him? E-mail and IM are fine but I think actually talking to the person is better. If you do have to communicate then I guess I would maybe go the IM route so that it is real time.

I would tell the person look "Joe" I understand that you are busy with your own projects but the work needed from you on my project is also important to me. I understand that it may not be a priority and can respect that, however, I think I am going to have to go a different direction with someone else. I certainly admire your talent, but the missed deadlines are causing problems and I need to make sure everything stays on track. Hopefully in the future there will be another project or site that we can work together on.

But that is just my .02.
