You can only do so much without the use of AS though.

And in response to the main post, I have found my knowledge and skill with flash to be extremely useful and have been hired by places as a web/flash developer. Not fully understanding what you are trying to get at, if you're comparing what you can do with AJAX to emulate an effect in flash, they are very little alike.

Flash is extremely important. about 90% of high trafficing sites have some sort of .swf file in them. You can do virtually anything in the program and it is extremely easy to learn.

I'm currently studying Flash for two reasons. It is used for delivering online video which has become a very important content type on the web. It is also used for animation which can be a cheap means of creating original content for online video. The Internet is becoming an entertainment platform which will replace television. I've seen 360 degree video panoramas which is probably the future of video and not something a dumb TV can play.

No offence but that is absurd. Televisions will be around for AGES. But yes more content may be available on the web. And whats that about 360 defree video panorama? You have a 360 degree computer monitor?. I don't understand where your getting at, electronic equipment can't be 'dumb'.

Never hurts to learn a new skill. Learning Flash won't be too difficult for you if you're already good with AJAX, and once you know Flash you can also get into developing for Flex and AIR which are both very cool.

Although it is not a necessary skill for Web Designer, but I think Flash and Actionscript would be good skill to have. I have started using Flash and Actionscript since version 1 and I have found that it has become a great and powerful tool Todate.
