What is the 1st thing Id do when opening photoshop on a comp I have ? ... Would go, wth, howd this get installed ? Then Id shut it down and open gimp, lol. Which I barely know how to use, may not be as good as PS in some ways. But big time advocate of opensource, lol.

Just being a dork nevermind.

Well, I don't design much but when I do mess with it...

CTRL+SHIFT+S (usually I'm editing a current PSD)

Hit CTRL+s often!

Rename the background layer.

Fez,
I believe you get the award for the best response on this topic. I can't believe people still CONSIDER using Photoshop for professionally designing logos, business cards, etc. these days. The fact that some designers still don't know the difference between vector and raster is enough to drive me crazy. I just feel bad for their clients when they realize that they won't be able to make the design any larger than it was when it was given to them.

set up a few actions like:
findCenter (shift + f5) = puts guides at 50% vertical an hori ergo finding center
grid (shift + f6) = 10x10 grid (a guide every 10%)
clear (shift +f7) = clear all guides (hotkey)

this gives me a certain amount of functionality the find center cmd will come in handy

I always begin by importing images / objects created in other software first. I never begin a new project in photoshop but always end them there.
