How to Write a Winning Personal Statement

“I really think I deserve this job….”

Let me stop you there. You’re writing a personal statement in order to Interest a prospective employee, customer, or tutor in an academic establishment of some sort. You just bored them before you got a chance to tell them about yourself, nice job.

Keyword highlighted is Interest, because that’s what you’re doing. Grabbing some bodies attention in a formal and respectable manner, and giving them an Interesting insight into you as a person, and how you would suit their organization or establishment.

Here are 5 Top Tips for writing a ‘Winning Personal Statement’

  • Never begin a sentence with the word ‘I’.
  • Do not try to be funny
  • Don’t lie
  • Keep your paragraphs short, sweet, and special. Add an element which entices the reader to carry on going and find out more about you, your skills, and your persona.
  • Grammar, spell, and structure checks are always good. Do it 10 times if needed so long as in the end your statement is readable, cohesive and relevant. Nobody likes spelling mistakes or sentences that……fall off mid-sentence (almost had you fooled).
Let’s hope that the next time you have to produce a personal statement, that you don’t bore your audience to sleep, or force them to put your application in the ‘not interested’ pile. Believe me, this one little piece of a very important document is what gets you where you want to go.

Tip: You need to understand yourself, and your moral reasoning and purposes before you can allow others to do the same. Collect a page of keywords that describe you as a person before you begin to write. The more exciting and understandable words used, the better. Keep your text colorful, after all you are writing about yourself.
