What do you plan on using it for? I started with Maya because I was fortunate to get a copy from a digital media program I took. If you don't have the budget and are just looking to get used to 3D modeling I recommend Swift3D.

Other programs I have worked with include 3DS Max, Bryce, and Lightwave.

you can get Maya Personal Learning Edition for free. It's an educational version though, so you're limited in that you can't render images larger than a certain size and it puts watermarks on your render as well.

Maya is good because it's pretty much the standard program they use for 3d graphics in movies these days.

Cinema 4D is quite simple, but worth a try to get started I guess.

The best program to use for 3d modelling is probably maya, although 3d studio max is also very powerful and reasonably easy to learn or so i'm finding. If you can afford the price tag (think it's close to $2,000) and you're willing to put aside a few hours a day learning it i'm sure you can be a decent modeller in a month or two

I agree. Maya is industry standard for movies, but 3DSMax is the industry standard for gaming. But both can basically do the same thing as eachother.

Blender is a good free open source option, it is powerful with an experienced user.

Another free open source 3d program is Terragen, you can design incredible landscapes in Terragen.
