I'd e-mail some bigger blogs in your niche about a good recent article and get linked.
Also, try to get in the first five comments with a link to your blog.

Submit articles to Digg, StumbleUpon, etc. Definitely try and get noticed by the bigger blogs in your field.

Blogrush?!? I was signed up with them for months and only got something like 1 visitor. All the experts say that it is crap, too.

I like the idea of a controversial article or two, as long as it is of the type that will not offend visitors.
If you are in it for the long term, nothing beats quality content. So, be prepared to write, and write, and write some more.
Also consider participating in forums on your blog's topic. For example, our blog is about our home renovation and energy conservation experiences. So I joined some home renovation forums and energy conservation / environmental sites. But, in doing this we also learned a lot and are thankful to those who helped us in our renovations, energy conservation efforts and even in our blog design.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for giving me the controversial article idea!
Dan

Google search engine - upload your url
have it as signature on forums and emails that you send out
nothing else is immediately coming to my mind ...check the money making blog below on my signature...it has some mkting tips too - go through the archives on the blog an see what benefits you

You can join link exchanges that are especially for blogs such as blog rush and my roomie. Other than that try digging some of your favorite posts - it will bring instant traffic

Getting listed on StumbleUpon works well for many types of sites.
