  Old  Unable to select text in IE

Hey peeps,

So I'm getting told by my bosses to fix this problem I'm having in IE. They can't select the dang text. I've done some search, looks like a bug in IE 6. Anyone know of a way around this?

Yet another annoying thing about Div tags.

Doing some more searching, I found a "fix" for my issue. Figured I'd share with the rest of the people who have this issue.

Put this at the top of your files.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

I think some people were saying they had problems with this tag. I don't know anything about it. Just that it fixed the issue. Peace out.

ahahahahahahaha...no.
you're basically telling the browser to interpret the document as if it was in a language that it's not. It will lead to problems down the track, mark my words.

Julian -- That's because I fixed (or so I think) the problem. Check out the second post to the original topic.

Jono1 -- What sort of problems will we have down the line? Will things blow up? Will it not work when Longhorn comes out? Will we have to worry about anything soon? or is this just a pre-emptive warning about things to come? It'd take two seconds to remove, so I'm not too concerned if this is a furture thing. Do you know what I could do differently? I remove that line and I can't select the text. WTF?

I realize this is an awkward fix, however my boss will love me for allowing her to select the text. I don't know why this was important to her...I told her to use Firefox and she got mad at me :-S. Stupid IE and their bugs.

Just out of curiosity, try replacing
Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1251" />
with
Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
And remove the XML line, what you're doing with that is telling the browser that your page is XML, which it isn't; That's the problem down the road

I'm pretty sure that what you did is give the characters the incorrect encoding, then override that with an incorrectly used XML tag.

That didn't seem to help. I left it in there anyway for somethings and giggles.

Anyone else have an idea I can try?
