I'm not saying they're claiming rights to any use of the idea of an arrow icon. Copyright holds true
for the actual piece of (art)work created by someone. So if you use that
actual arrow without permission, it is illegal. If you create a very similar arrow, because it is such a generic shape (and lets face it, not very important intellectual property-wise) there are no copyright problems.
