Does the firefox adblock extension only block popups or all advertising? Can you see the adverts on forums? e.g Talkfreelance/Webhostingtalk etc.

Firefox blocks popups by default, the adblock extension does not do this.

Adblock is for specifically blocking images, i-frames or .swf's

You have to block each individual image/ad with adblock, it doesn't block them all by default.

I use it to block almost all extraneous advertising imagery from most websites. This greatly reduces page load times and bandwidth used.

The way to circumvent this Robson, is to use css's background image tags.

I use the FF extention adblock too but I only block ads on sites that I feel use too many ads.

Btw, you can block all ads/images on a site by using wildcards (*).

I only have FF's default pop-up blocker turned on... and recently, I've been getting more and more pop-ups that don't get blocked.
