Those tables are in accurate, do not listen to them. Here is my take on PR, I've done a lot of research on it on DP etc. So take my advice with a grain of salt.

Your actual pagerank is updated ALL the time. The Google Toolbar (or the page rank that we see at sites such as www.pagerank2.com) are only updated every 3 months or so. Yes of course a higher PR = more expensive link sales. But nobody would be purchasing high PR links if they didn't do anything. So PR DOES serve a purpose, what purpose is that? It improves your SERP's. A high PR linkback is a very strong vote towards the quality of your pages content. Google wants to serve its users the best content possible, therefore if you have a page with some highly trusted, high ranking PR's back links than you should place better in the SERP's.

Its impossible to determine how many links you need to get to certain parts of the PR ranking system, so I do not see why people publish those charts. I think you should focus on getting all of your pages indexed into Google before you worry about page rank. I'm assuming the web site that you are talking about is ScrimsNow? I suggest you right some quality, unique articles about your niche/subject. Google LOVES good content! And if it is unique, written well, and is what people want, then people will link to it. And that creates backlinks which also means higher page rank. And with the fact that if it is content that Google is looking for, you will receive organic search traffic, and place high in the SERP's because people are linking to your content.

Once you've gotten yourself into the Big 3 (Google, MSN, Yahoo) you can try and submit your website to directories. Here is a list of about 40 PR5+ (most are PR6) free directories:
http://search66.com/
http://www.imegamall.com
http://www.somuch.com
http://www.tsection.com
http://linkcentre.com
http://www.jayde.com/
http://www.search4i.com
http://www.redjuniper.com
http://turnpike.net
http://www.rdirectory.net
http://www.directoryvault.com
http://search.ezilon.com
http://www.allthewebsites.org
http://www.directory.ldmstudio.com
http://www.addsite-submitfree.com/
http://www.klik-klik.com/
http://www.digitaldir.eu
http://www.zunchdirectory.com
http://www.addurl-free.com
http://www.cyber-find.net
http://www.dirdir.info
http://www.elib.org/
http://www.info-listings.com/
http://peksman.com/
http://www.megri.com
http://searchsight.com
http://www.skoobe.biz/
http://www.urlz.net/
http://www.dramba.com
http://www.seekzap.com
http://www.middsailing.org
http://www.nterface.net
http://www.brightlightdarkroom.com
http://www.toplinesearch.com
http://www.spheri.com
http://www.hoppa.com/
http://www.mixcat.com
http://www.scrubtheweb.com
http://www.tygo.com/
http://www.abifind.com

That should help your PR. Also, I forgot to mention that a higher PR also means Google will crawl your website more. So if you have a forum or a frequently updated web site, this could really benefit you because your pages will be indexed into Google much quicker!

Also, don't forget basic SEO techniques, such as:
  • Giving each article an individual highly relevant page title.
  • Using meta descriptions and keywords, but not abusing them. (not that beneficial)
  • Using H1 and H2 tags.
  • Using good keyword density and specific phrase targeting. (this is a highly argued subject, so be careful with it)
  • Using good quality, unique, original and focused content.
  • Building some well anchored backlinks.
  • With a good navigational system between articles.

For your question on how to get your websites into Google, go to http://www.google.com/ and creat an account. Go to webmaster tools and follow the directions there. Using the webmaster tools area, you can upload a Google Sitemap which will help Google crawl your webpage. Sitemaps are very beneficial, just make sure you update the sitemaps when you add new pages to your website.

Wow, I went off on a bit of a tangent there. I guess I was in the mood for writing today . Well, that is a summery of what I've been reading about over at DigitalPoint, so you may want to do your own research about some of those topics if you aren't clear about what to do. Hope that helps ya out

Okay It might give you a better chance of selling links. But do you really think that googles engine is as simple as a 1-10 list for determaning the strength of your site?

@jamesh: It wasn't said word for word, but I just wanted to make sure nobody had the assumption that the number on it's own give you anything other than a chance to sell some links.
