Old  How to determine page ranking and how to improve it?

Hi

Have been wondering...
it may seem a silly question
but what is page ranking and how do we determine it?
And more importantly how can one improve one's site's page ranking

Backlinks help to improve your pagerank, but google only updates the pr every few months, so it could take 4 months before your site has a pr rating.

Also if the sites new it will probably be stuck in the google sandbox

A PR10 linking to you is as good as two PR9's linking to you, a PR9 is as good at two PR8's, a PR8 is as good as two PR7's and so on, however it is quite hard to find high PR sites that are willing to link to your site for free

im still a little confused I think it's saying the more people go to my site from google the higher the page rank will be? What if there were different search queries? Would it still be higher up?
