Go ahead and start one, you can make your name seen, but first you need lots of money!
Costs:
A) Advertising
B) Bills for hosting
C) Staff
D) Software

You'll need to offer something what everyone else can't do to make your way, it's a big gamble.

Get $10,000 first before starting, minimum.

if you don't have much money to spend and don't want to risk your money for this investment..try to avoid it.

Maybe you should start with something less risky but will bring you a lot of money. After that maybe you be able to starting a hosting company.

Basically if you can afford a good vps or a dedicated and you have alot of time on your hands its a great idea to start a hosting company, but you have to give it your 100% effort or you it wont be worth it.

Go local... Thats unique. Dont try and become a HUGE web based host. Advertise localy and get someone who can do good design/dev work as well. Sell them as a package or at least advertise them as a package. But as people said before you might just want to try something else. About 2 years ago I was a host who had broke into the black and was starting to get things rolling when I was hit with so much CC fraud that I couldnt recover :-(. Had to sell my customers and keep them online cause (IMO) I was one of the hosts who gave a **** about my customers and wanted to help them out as much as possible.

So I plan on re-starting but with a more local intention and the place I am currently has a need so it will work well when I get there...
