I'm an amateur photographer and I use a Canon 500D Mark II with the following lenses:
50mm (portrait)
10-22mm (wide-angle)
18-200mm (wide/standard)
70-300mm (telephoto)
24-105mm (standard)

To anyone interested in getting into photography, I'd suggest looking into the Canon Rebel T1i with a lens or two...it's a great camera for the price.

Actually, one of the best camera's out right now for the budget of $1000 is the NIKON D90. Hands down.

Here's my best friends work. This is done with D90/D80

Depends on wheather you want a Point and Shoot camera or a DSLR camera. If you are looking for something in between. DSLR features for less price than go for a Canon SX10 IS camera Which I have. It also has a newer version which is known as Canon SX20 IS Both Cameras cost around $350-$450. They have great 560mm inbuilt lens.

Nikon SLR. Not point and shoot, but this thing is the swiss army knife of quality cameras.

I have a Canon 40D, it's great. If you're going for a SLR, remember its the lens that's more important, not the body. So you'd be better off getting a cheaper body and really spending on the lens (if you're on a budget, that is).
