A lot of empty space, very plain and there are no really like design parts that I like. I do not like the solid color oval header's on the sub boxes on left/right side.
why is everyone so bothered aboued white space, used correctly white space can be a good thing, i think you are close to getting the right balance...just change the login background.
Not bad Tom, have a think about the use of red through that site. Red is a powerful colour, and should be used to move viewers throughout your site. It overpowers the blue and the main block of red is in the center. This leads me straight to the search box and nothing else. I wouldn't even bother to read any of the blue stuff, which is probably the most important content on the main page. Maybe consider using the blue to the sides and the red down the center column, and make the search box blue (or gray)
