Hi, I want to create something similar to what happens when you click the settings link on http://www.netvibes.com/ (where the whole page is darkened apart from the box that has appeared). Does anybody know any tutorials or examples of how to do this?

Well, i know an image thumbnail version. Quite a few of them actually.
You click an image thumbnail and bring up the full size image.

You can also use it for websites i think and embed pages into it.

Search for one of these:
Litebox
Thickbox
Slimbox
Lightbox

I'm already using the mootools library on my site so slimbox would be perfect. Has anybody used slimbox with actual html content rather than just images?

Just had a quick look there and slimbox only seems to work with images Would using 2 different libraries (mootools and jquery) be too much on a single page?

Why not give MoodalBox a try? It seems more close to what you're looking for.

Why don't you try Grey Box, its free and very good for what you need.

* It does not conflict with pop-up blockers
* It's only 22 KB!
* It's super easy to setup
* It's super easy to use
* You can easily alter the style as it is controlled through CSS
