Vector is always the safe way to go as most clients (not all) end up using them on other bits and bobs.. but if you know its purely for website use I think a very large JPG would be fine.

Remember photorealistic images JPG , flat cartoony images do well in .GIF

Vector formats are the best in my opinion as you can change the sieze
without affecting the quality

adobe photo shop cs3 or cs4 is good for logo design.

Seems most sites require logos to be .jpg so I would go with that...

jpg format is best for picture logo and it easy to use in adobe photo shop software.
