  Old  External Hard Drive

I want to install Mac OS X Leopard on my external hard drive so I can use it as my back up drive. When I do this, do I have to back up all the files on the hard drive or they wont be deleted?

Backup everything on the external... You will probably need to format to install OSX on it just like all other OS's

Just make a partition on the external that is like 10gb big and install OSX to it, then back up everything to the other partition.

Yeah, that's what I did. Just picked up a 500GB LaCie external HD myself.

It is better to load OS in a separate segment of a disk means separate partition. And do not use that particular partition as another purposes.

it is profitable for you if you install external hard drive in your lap top.

Why do you want to install an OS onto the external harddrive? Surely if it's formatted to Mac OS Journaled you can just drag and drop the files you want to backup or alternatively use time machine to create automatic backups? But bare in mind windows computers will have trouble reading/writing to this format though.
