To Upgrade, or Build a New One?
Not to long ago I posted a thread about a new computer I'm thinking about building. Well I'm having drawbacks, and I don't think I'm ready to pay $1300 for a computer. I was thinking of upgrading my current desktop, so I wanted your opinion. Here is my current setup:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (1.8 GHz)
GeForce 6800 GS 128MB AGP
Asus A7V9X-X Mobo
1024 PC2700 RAM (2 sticks, 2 different brands)
I'm thinking about upgrading the box with this:
OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
Radeon X1950PRO 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 8X IceQ 3 Turbo HDCP Video Card (or maybe the 7950 GT, however I heard there are some issues about quality)
And a new fan for my CPU. Whenever I get into a game, my computer locks up because of the heat.
So which route would you take? I'm getting double the amount of memory at a faster speed, and a current top-of-the-line-mid-range graphics card where I can eventually run 2 monitors, whenever I get to that point in my online career, and play every game on the market (unlike now). Of course the new computer would be better, but would it be safe to upgrade 1 last time?

I am correct in assuming that your motherboards sockets are as follows?
processor socket 939
184pin ram (2 gigs possible?)
pci-e x16
If so, get a new computer, all your pieces are outdated and anything within upgrade range of that mobo is also outdated.

Definately new computer with that motherboard. Go width PCI-E. If you want, I can send you my specs for my new computer and take a look. It's about $1000 for the computer itself, plus I have extras included.

Yea, please send the specs Andrew. Last time I checked we were looking at similar parts. And in between posting this thread, my computer crashed twice because of heating problems, so I might as well use that as an excuse to upgrade everything...

All those parts are on Newegg, and the shipping/rebates/discounts were taken as I viewed them so they might be different. Discounts are also automatically taken out on Newegg.

Well I don't need the power supply, mouse or headset so I just opted for a Raptor hard drive. Total came to $1,076.87. Not that bad I guess. I'll have to think about it for awhile though...

Get a Macbook :P. LOL no not unless you are a Apple fan. Building a computer is the cheapest and probably the best way to go.

I'd say keep you RAM and GC and get core 2 duo and a gigabyte ds3p mobo, which would leave you with much more room to expand, and a 8600 GT or a 8800 GTS would be a much better card to go with that a X1950.

I don't have a pci express card, but an AGP. It wouldn't be possible to use my old graphics card. Also, with PC2700 ram, wouldn't it just create a bottle neck on my CPU (the Core 2 Duo), and just make it run slower?
Also, I'm not about to waste $1000 on a 13 inch, 1 gigabyte or ram, computer that I'm just going to install Windows on and not even use most of its features. Thought about it, by just thought to myself that there wasn't any point, its just a Mac, nothing special...
