  Old  Authorize.net or PayPal?

What are the pros and cons of using Authorize.net versus using PayPal for payment processing in third party shopping carts like ZenCart?

Authorize.net is a gateway to a merchant account, so you need a merchant account in order to use it. Paypal, can be used in the same way if desired, but ads the ability to accept credit card or Paypal user payment without the need for a merchant account.

Paypal is great if you are starting out, as getting a merchant account can sometimes be difficult. Many people see it as being more professional to have a merchant account and something like Authorize.net because customers can complete their transactions without leaving your website.

Also be aware that with a simple Paypal setup, no SSL certificate is required, however if you choose to go the merchant account route, either through Paypal or some other gateway provider, you will require and SSL certificate.

I hope this helps.

Ideally I would offer both.

Many people actually prefer to pay using PayPal so don't limit to one or the other, on the other hand few people don't trust PayPal and would rather enter there CC details each time (Silly) so offer a traditional payment gateway service like authorise.net or worldpay etc.

Incidentally if your are UK or US based then PayPal has PayPal pro which offers the features of a proper payment gateway (transaction is done on your site) but you can also take PayPal payments too.

As for SSL although technically it is not necessary if you are using PayPal Std to take payments to have an good SSL certificate on your own site, it is however good practise to have SSL anywhere that personal / confidential information like addresses, phone numbers, DOB etc are being viewed or submitted to be behind a secure (SSL) connection and your customers will consider your site more professional if they see you are looking after their privacy.

Check out our cheap SSL prices for a really good deal.

Authorize.net has the bonus of giving an air of stability to your business. It's one thing to also offer paypal, but to use it exclusively gives your company more of a fly-by-night feel. jmo

Another Vote for CDGCommerce.com!

Paypal.com - Higher Fees, no monthly fees

Authorize.net(CDGCommerce) - Lower Fees & monthly fees

Again, having your own merchant account (mentioned above) is a plus in business. The ones who do not have a paypal account and end up transferred to a paypal website (leaving your website) may leave your website all together as they might not be interested in signing up for an account via paypal or if they have no idea what paypal is they might just leave your website confused.

Hi,
I think that having as much payment methods as you can maintain is quite good as at least your customers may have more trust in what you are doing.

I vote for both Authorize.net and paypay - especially when you know how to manage your sales. And if you can connect authorize.net with your bank account and get merchant services, you will see the difference.

Good Luck!
