mod_rewrite query

Hey
I was lookin at the other thread but i was a bit confused. Basically i want a file name like this site.com/index.php?a=user_cp to become site.com/user_cp
Can i do one code to make all the pages like that at all? And do i have to change the links in order for them to work.
