Old  Made a design for a client - never paid - what should I do?

Do not use Matthew Brown from The Frankfurt Group.

http://www.thefrankfurtgroup.com/

I was asked to do a design by Matthew Brown for http://www.streetsurvival.org/

He sent me emails back and forth giving me amend after amend.

Whenever I asked for payment, it was simply - I'll get my assistant to sort it out.

When my designs had been approved, I asked for payment - His excuse was someone had passed away in his family he would return after 2 days.

I wait 2 days...nothing. I have to keep chasing him up then he keeps saying, "I'll be back in the office in a few days"

Went on for a full 4 weeks SINCE having done the designs for him.

He then said -

I need your TAX ID to pay you. I gave it.

Still no luck.

Finally I had no option but to open this topic to let others know about this guy and since then I have received some crazy emails from him that you may find in this topic for your own information and future experience as freelancers.

I have stored all emails and IP of his so if any wants anything for an article on scammers for the net, feel free.

He has agreed to pay and after 3 weeks - I am expecting it tomorrow so for now I am removing the original message so his company does not get any spam or abusive emails.

Let's see what happens.

Thanks guy for your help - us web freelancers, should take care of each other more often

Basically I take "someone passed away/someone is in the hospital" as a red light.

This is why you should take a deposit upfront.

Don't give him your tax ID number. He doesn't need it. Even as an employer/contractor basis, the work is already done with no contract filed before hand - therefore (though both of you are legally liable), you don't have to give him that information. If he infact required it before hand, he would've asked for it.

The fact that he is a for-profit group gives you leverage. You now have the basis for suing since he is a registered business. You need to talk with your parents, let them know the situation, and if everyone deems it worthy, you could have some sort of legal support on your side.

However, like I mentioned earlier - with no contract, there isn't much you can do - but the fact that he is a for-profit, not giving you money, should give you some power since the consequences of not paying you and receiving penalties to his own company far outweigh the money he should pay you.

To me - it's a load of BS. REAL companies will present themselves in a professional manner and not like this. Either he's wasting your time, or he's looking for personal information to do some more serious damage (such as identity theft) then what he's already done.

Or you can cut your losses. Sell the template, get some money back, and walk away from this with a lesson learned.

His latest email -

"We're a private sectored company - anything above 600$ we are liable to report to the IRS.

If I could just have your tax ID, we'd be great.

Thanks,

m"
