Old  Level of business skills in freelancers drasticly going downhill

I'm finding myself hitting brick wall after brick wall, with the exception of a few decent freelancers, the majority of people i've dealt with just simply lack any real business skills.

I've sent quotes off to 5 seperate designers this week (about 3 days ago) and no one has got back to me, one of the 5 designers I actually contacted about a month ago and it took 2 weeks just for a quote to come through.

I have also hired a coder (Sam Granger) who is now 2 1/2 weeks over a proposed deadline for coding work.

My hat really does go off to Anthony, about a week ago I asked for a design, it was done within 48 hours and to my specification. Seriously, alot of people can learn a thing or too from him.

Anyway, anyone know any decent designers? I know there alot of good designers here but this is for my biggest project and i'm looking for something stunning, budget is fairly good....Anthony showed me www.fubon.co.uk (that's the sort of quality i'm after) However, he hasn't got back to me yet.

Cheers....sorry for rant, just fed up of not being able to find a reliable designer/coder.

Thanks for the comments Rob, much appreciated.

The quicker and the higher the standard of work is done and done to, the better it is for the designer and the client. 99% of my business comes from return customers who I have really pleased the first time around.

People talk, why not let them talk about you

(im also looking for a reliable coder of the xhtml/css variety)

No problem Robson, I understand that there are out there that call themselfs professional but are actually not, and dont respect the client. I'm a Web designer my self, (Design only) and have had not one bad Testimonial yet.

thanks,
- Lewis

I deal with freelancers nearly on a daily basis.

It's extremely hard to find good people! I would say more than half the designers, programmers, and coders I hire go past the deadline or don't meet the specifications on the project.

I have also hired Anthony recently, within the past month. He couldn't meet a deadline but made up for it with an honest explanation and extra effort. The design came out great.

As far as an XHTML/CSS coder, I would definitely suggest Egor ( http://www.influid.com.au/ ). He is a bit pricey compared to most coders you will find around here but he never fails to meet a deadline and he goes beyond the specifications. I have hired him a few times in the past and he has never disappointed me.

Last but not least, if you need a PHP/MySQL programmer, Paris Holley has done a great job so far on my project. The deadline is Friday and it's really coming together.

That's enough plugging for one post. I would suggest browsing DeviantArt.com - it has a lot of undiscovered talent.

Good luck with your project.

I totally agree with you Robson, many freelancers out there have no idea how to please customers and keep good business links.

I myself had 2 freelancers seriously letting me down, 1 of them made me wait 2 weeks and then just decided that he didnt have time after all and a few others have either tried to overcharge me or did not do the requested work to good standards.

What I found most frustating and unprofessional was the total lack of communication with me as a client.
Emails were often ignored and no status on work being done.
