Here are some techniques for marketing online that worked for me personally.

1. Online Networking through communities
2. Writing articles and placing them online.
3. My newsletter
4. Running online workshops
5. The Free Traffic Bar free advertising system

I think "what is best for you" depends on your goals, Transburgh has stated adwords for him, as he sells a product. My self, i run what you would a fansite of types, my Goals are just to Provide Value to the Community for the games - i am finding just getting links on other visited sites for the Same Niche's have been the best way to grown - be aware thou - i don't have advertising on my sites either. If that's the case, just alot of Directorys submissions and similer would help in that goal.

It sounds like your Goals are just Numbers, as in some type MFA site (please correct me if i am wrong - that is just the impression i got).
