It's difficult... I've been playing the make money online web game for awhile also. Based on my experiences I've kind of come to the conclusion that it might be best to get a product out there, one that you can keep on selling and get recurring income (passive would be best, one that sells whether or not you are putting in work).
From what I hear, information products are a good route. I'm currently working on an ebook for one of my sites. We'll see how it goes - but I'm hopeful. Even if I make one sale a month it'll do better then adsense.
