5. Make sure you cover all topics on your boards but don't create too many topics. Don't go over 20-25 different topics.
|
I hope you are talking about the main subjects you discuss, not the threads themlseves, since you need HUNDREDS of threads to make people want to join.
When I launch a new board I open 20-30 threads DAILY, or even more
As for the title: How to start a successful forum, you cannot start a succesful forum, you make it so All starting forums are empty and not appealing, but with effort we can make them successful Anyway .. great idea for the topic indeed.

I run a pretty sucessful exotic car community. The url is www.exotiXboard.com, and IMO the methods you explaind are right on par with what I have been trying to do.

11. Install mods for your forums that are neccessery.
|
Couldn't agree any less with that one. I hate going to those forums with currency and shops and rpg mods. They ruin a forum more, instead of helping it.

I think the best thing you can do for your forum is after you post 50-75 useful posts, put your site in your sig. It works, I have gotten some good traffic to squaredforums.net

You have to invest money into your forum if don't want it to be a drag in the beginning.

Not true. A domain and hosting are a must, but outside of that, nothing is absolutely necessary. I can guarantee that there are people out there who did not invest a dime (outside of hosting) who are miles beyond those who spend hundreds of dollars on software, designs, advertising, contests, etc.
Now...does investing help your forums? Of course it does, it helps a whole lot...but to say that you must invest money to prevent being a drag in the beginning is not true. It's all a matter of time and dedication.

True. If the interest is there, and competition is light, you can get away without advertising and build a decent sized community by self promotion of posting in other places to get the word out, a decent Google placement and lots of time and effort.
My forum, which isn't really big but is successful in my niche averages about 1,000 posts per day and was built without spending a dime on advertising.
If your forum subject is really narrow in scope and has a small audience, you might need advertising from the start to make people aware your site is out there.
Really depends on your forum subject matter, size of the target audience and where that audience can be reached.
Good suggestions Broken!
