In my opinion, directory submission is very useful. However, you need to submit to at least 1000 directories in order to see useful results.

I suggest one should not use free directory submission services, since the automated ways of directory submission is discouraged by Google. And google can also penalized your site.

Link from directories can definitely help you in search engines but make sure to submit in quality web directories and also take PR of those directories into consideration.

directory submission is helpful to increase a Google page rank but if you will do only directory submission then it takes a more time. so you have to do also SMO, bookmarking, blog submission , blog commenting, article submission, RSS , etc...
