Releasing a domain name
What should I do if I don't want my domain anymore? Is it OK to simply let the domain expired and not renew it, or should I officially notify the registrar that I will release the domain?

Just let it expire, but do know that it will be scooped up by domain farmers (resellers) in days so don't count on ever getting it back.

Just let it expire. There is no need to contact your domain registrar for stuff like that.
And no one will scoop your domain up within days. You have 30 days to get it back. When the thirty days are up THAT'S when it goes on the market.

Mind if I ask what the domain is? Might be interested in it if it's decent!

That's great, thanks. I am aware that once I release it I wouldn't be able to get it back (in 30 days?), so I would only let expired the domains I really don't want anymore.
@ Jordan: Sorry it's just a hypothetical situation, but I would let you know when I have such domains.

Just let it expire. To do this make sure your domain name is set to manual renew, not auto-renew. With auto-renew, the domain name registrar automatically charges your credit card for the renewal of that domain name.
Word of caution. I allowed one of my domain names to expire this way. The problem was, I used that domain name before as the URL of an actual web page. I have also referred to it in some of my blog and forum comments. In other words, there are back-links to it already. When it expired, an adult website snatched it. It was embarrassing to get an email from a concerned blog reader before, asking me whether I'm aware of what's in my website these days.

Wow, that's embarrassing, thanks for the heads up Mac. I wouldn't release a domain which has many back-links to it already, unless someone is willing to pay high for it.

Make sure its auto renewal is not set then let it expire. If its on it won't expire and will renew without your knowledge. Taweem.

The best way to release a domain name is to inform your domain registrar that you don't need the domain name anymore. If you cancel the domain name, you won't get any notification emails for its renewal. If you don't cancel it and wait for the domain to get expired, your inbox will be flooded by notification emails.

To OP
If you don't need domain name anymore, then simply place that domain name for sell. The best market place for domain trading is Sedo or you can also sell your domains on forums. Lot of forums have a relevant category for domain selling and purchase. If your domain name is catchy, then you can earn very attractive money....
