That was before he learned the "truth" of it, and was hoping to make some money from it, because of all the hype it created. Either that, or he already knew it was bogus and just wanted to make money off it.

If things were to "end" at a specific date, the world will still continue on without us. The only "end" to it, would be for us humans. Because we wouldn't be around to keep records and future records, for all the obvious reasons. We wouldn't be here to keep track of it. Everything would be gone except for the Earth and other stuff, unless the Earth blew up too. But even then, I'm sure most other stuff will continue on, so really there's no "end".
