for a while now i have wanted to get to using contracts but i havnt had an idea of what to add to the information on the contract.
i understand that it should talk about
- agreements to fulfil the required info etc.
- payment or any sort should be paid within x days after completion etc.
is there any place where i can see or a template i can get ideas off of for a contract?
help would be much appreciated.

How formal are the contracts, and what do you guys usually include in them? If anyone wants to post one of there sample contracts up here I think it might benefit some of the others. I'm definately looking into doing something like this in the future, but I want to know what exactly your putting in it and how you set it up.
Thanks in advance.

Just do a search for independent contractor agreements. There are tons available, and you can tweak them to fit your needs pretty easily until you're ready and able to draft your own from scratch.
Here's an example: http://www.toolkit.cch.com/tools/indcon_m.asp
And another: http://www.inc.com/tools/2000/12/21529.html
And one more: http://www.legaldocs.com/htsgif.d/xind-con.mv
Just pick one that works for you and edit it.

Thanks alot jh, and do you usually just have them fax it over? What do you do for the actual process? Another explanation for that would be awesome to. Thanks again for doing that.

I don't design much, and when I do it sucks. But every now and then when I run across a designer who seems a little questionable, but has an awesome portfolio, I'll send them my own contract to make sure they don't screw me.

Once I have secured a contract I send it via registered mail. If a quick reply is necessary then fax is sufficient and a legal means of contract supply and receipt. Make sure the signatures and dates etc are legible with a faxed version.

Contracts
I usually do a contract with newer clients. Some of my older ones, we still do business basically on a handshake and a smile.
