Seems the most expensive domain extension is .tv
To buy a .tv domain for 20 years it is in the thousands.
People seem to be buying domains in the hundreds just for one site and that takes names away from others.

There will always be a feasible domain name. Adding words such as the, a, online, net, etc to the end / start of a domain will always be available. Then names that use those will expire and so the cycle will start again.

However, dictionary names will always be taken / going for a large price. So will well known names with forum / board / bb / discussion added to the end of them.

I do believe that someone will come up with something revolutionary in terms of domain names. The internet will be very different / obsolete in 20 years time - assured.

I think it'll come down to the point where just .com domains in general will be rare.

If, and only if, all the good domains are taken, it will be just the same as it is now. The domain you want is taken, so you will look for an alternate extension, look to buy domain names or use the name with a prefix or suffix. Nothing will really change. It'll just be harder to find a domain to suit you.

Depending on your budget, even crappy domains could be household names.
