Old  ZippyChecky.Com - Fast Domain Checker

Hey guys,

I started working on a project a few days ago and started looking up domain names. I was getting annoyed with the standard GoDaddy and similar domain checkers so went to look for a better one. I couldn't find one that satisfied what I was looking for, so I put together ZippyChecky.

The idea is to be able to easily try many domain names and, in a way, ride on a train of thought for a domain without being slowed down by page loads.

Let me know what you think and if there are any problems (it's still just a few days old! ) I'm particularly curious how its doing in Safari and other mac browsers.

www.zippychecky.com

Thanks!

-Nicky

1. I wasnt sure whether or not I needed to include the http or www before entering the domain

2. Wheres the GO button? Until I realised I had to hit 'enter' I almost clicked on the Yahoo banner - needs the button

3. I dont see anything unique here - how is this any different from existing systems?

You can enter the http://, tld, etc but it will parse it out so it doesn't make a difference. I thought rather than specifying, I would let the user do whatever they want and handle it after that. Do you think that's not the best way to go?

As far as the button... I was going for simplicity and have noticed that the enter key for submission is becoming a well understood standard, especially with 'web 2.0' sites (and sites geared towards designers). I was worried about that being an issue, hence the motto being "Type, hit, go" and the big instructions above the bar. If a bunch of people find this to be an issue though, I'll start thinking of some other alternatives.

I am unaware of any other domain checker that lets you just rattle off 2, 3, 4 or more possibilities at once and returns results as you add more. (Which is part of why hitting enter is the focus, moving a mouse to click submit is too slow! ). I like being able to see all of the possibilities listed for me as I go, so I've found it useful the past few days. Have you seen any other domain checkers that allow this?

Thanks ramone, I appreciate your response.

Ok maybe Ive missed something, however never ASSUME when it comes to usability. Always build with simplicity in mind and cater for the absolute beginner. Myself, I wanted to enter a domain name - and click on GO. Seriously, I got lost momentarily. If it can happen once it may just happen a hundred times. I would recommend putting the button in there. Of course retain the ability for users to just 'press enter' also.

Umm, as for rattling off 2,3, or 4 possibilities at once - I dont quite understand? Can I just type them in seperated with spaces???

Ill have another look.

Just a thought, you should add a feature that brings up the top 5 cheapest domain registrar's and their price to register that particular domain. Also some more registrars on the list you choose from.

As before, just a thought

I think the layout could be better, but I do like the available, unavailable icons.

You have a green box under the search bar that fades in when you open the page but disappears after. I'm in Safari on MacOSX.
