I suggest Cute News, very customizable, and very reliable. It may not be used all that much, but its a great system.

Definately recommend you look into CivicSpace. It's drupal with a bunch of preinstalled modules. I wouldn't call it a fork, and it saves a lot of time since the included modules are very usefull. Theres a steep learning curve but after a few days it should make sense.

I have used both of them and they are preety good to handle and customize whereas if you have few bucks to throw, Try subdreamer.com

I recommend Joomla, Drupal and Mambo Open Source.
PHPNuke is not a wise solution i must add.

I'll recommend Xoops, it has been coming along quite nicely so far and it is a huge plus for it to be Object Oriented.
