  Old  Generalist or Specialist?

In terms of the focus of your freelance business, do you consider yourself to be a "generalist" or a "specialist"? Did you start out that way or "evolve"?

I think specialist is more effective.

Generalist if you're trying to be a manager.

This blog post covers it in quite detail: http://www.exeneva.com/2010/11/diver...to-mediocrity/

A thought-provoking piece----thank you so much! (My previous professional life was as a manager---now I'm exploring the world of freelance work---maybe I've been hungry to specialize......?)

generalist = more work available to you, in theory.
specialist = higher wages for your work, in theory

It really depends on what you enjoy, what your skill levels are and how many clients you have right now. If you have real expertise that will command a higher price AND you can afford to hold out for it, then specialize.

I tend to be a specialist for the work I do. This way I can get the best of it and push myself to the max.

I started in web design which is nor here nor there but I drifted into marketing later and now I consider myself specialist for that but previous knowledge is there making me a bit of generalist too, I'm afraid.

Don't know what to say, really. I am specialized in layout creation, this means working in Photoshop, slicing the masterpiece and then coding it. In the past year I've worked on tens of wordpress themes, so, if we talk specialization, I think I am a WP theme designer.

I would like to go with generalist. Little knowledge of every thing is must. However you must be specialist in one thing. Pay attention on little.

Specialist on some, generalist on most.
